What is a Fistula Embolization?

The detachable coils can also be used to treat a venous-arterial defect , a not so common congenital illness vascular illlnesss. In these cases, the arteries and veins of the brain are not connected normally by the capillary, but by another abnomarl connection abnormal called arterious-venous fistula. This fistula can drain the whole blood off arteries before the brain circulation has been completed. The abnormal exchange of blood between the arteries and the veins can produce headache, hemorrhages, convulsions and cerebral spill, as well as neurological symptoms that affect the memory, the movement, the speech and the sight.

The coils can be used to block the flow of blood to an affected area or to stuff the fistula and with this avoid its rupture. Occasionally additional coils can be inserted in a later procedure to finish the treatment. The use of detachable coils to obstruct the fitula prolongs the life and alleviates the symptoms
